Breaking | Calcutta High Court Lifts Stay On Recruitment Of Civil Judge Candidates Who Qualified WBJS Exam 2022, Dismisses Pleas Challenging Process
Justice Arindam Mukherjee dismissed multiple pleas which had challenged the conduct of the exams.
Due to the pendency of the matter, the process of recruitment had been stayed by the High Court, and as a result, no civil judges had been appointed in the state of West Bengal from 2022 onwards. Even the candidates who had qualified the recruitment process after a preliminary exam, mains exam and interview, had been left in limbo due to non-appointment.
Lifting of the stay order paves the way for the appointment of civil judges in the state for the first time since 2022, and will thus alleviate the burden on the state's existing judicial infrastructure.
In a significant development, the Calcutta High Court has lifted the stay on the recruitment of Civil Judge (Junior Division) candidates who qualified in the West Bengal Judicial Services (WBJS) Examination 2022. This decision effectively dismisses the petitions challenging the recruitment process, paving the way for the appointment of the successful candidates.
The recruitment process had been on hold due to legal challenges, leaving qualified candidates in uncertainty. The preliminary examination for the 2022 batch was conducted in March 2023, followed by the mains in May 2023, and interviews thereafter. Despite completing all stages, the appointment of these candidates was stalled due to the pending litigation.
The High Court's recent decision to lift the stay order and dismiss the pleas challenging the recruitment process brings relief to the candidates awaiting their appointments. This move is expected to address the backlog in the judiciary by filling the vacant positions of Civil Judges in West Bengal.
