Mihir Shah, who discontinued his education after completing Class 10, is suspected by the police to have been intoxicated at the time of the incident.
During the early hours of Sunday, Kaveri Nakhwa (45), a resident of Worli Koliwada, was riding pillion with her husband Pradeep on Dr. Annie Besant Road when their two-wheeler was struck by a luxury car allegedly driven by Mihir Shah. According to police sources, the car dragged the woman for over 2 kilometers before coming to a stop. This information was relayed by a police official quoted by news agency PTI.
She was immediately taken to a hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead upon arrival.
Following the accident, the accused fled towards the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. He abandoned the car and his driver, Rajrishi Bidawat, who was seated beside him, near Kala Nagar in the Bandra area, and fled the scene, the official informed, as reported by PTI.
Mihir Shah's father Rajesh Shah, driver arrested
On Sunday, Mihir Shah's father Rajesh Shah and Bidawat were arrested by Worli Police for allegedly aiding Mihir Shah in escaping after the accident, stated the official.
Rajesh Shah is a Shiv Sena leader from Palghar and reportedly owns the car involved in the incident.
"In view of the possibility that Mihir Shah might attempt to flee the country, Mumbai Police issued a Look Out Circular (LOC) against him on Sunday evening," the official added.
The police have initiated a search for the accused and have deployed six teams to locate him, according to the official.
Authorities suspect that Mihir was intoxicated at the time of the accident, as he was seen at a bar in the Juhu area a few hours prior to the incident, the official added.
The police have discovered an ₹18,000 bill from the bar and are currently verifying it, stated the official without further details.
Additionally, the CCTV footage from the bar is under scrutiny, he confirmed.
Later today, the two arrested individuals will be presented before a local court, he further mentioned.
The accused have been charged under several sections, including 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), according to police sources.
